For the past few years, Alberto De Michele has focused on the shady environment of his father. De Michele is able to build bonds of trust with the people in it that allow him to explore the tension between popular conceptions of the underworld and his own ambiguous relationship to it. His work confronts the viewer with stories and images of a kind normally encountered in sensationalist reports and popular fiction. Thus, one of his recent pieces consists of a series of photographs of stolen paintings. De Michele obtained these pictures and a letter describing the details of the theft by posing as a prospective buyer.
'VIA DI PORTA LAVERNALE' (2011) - Laverna was the Roman goddess of thieves, cheats and crooks. She had her own sanctuary in Rome on Aventine Hill, near Porta Lavernalis, the city gate named after her. Before heading out to steal, thieves would go and seek her blessings. The street that runs there today is called Via di Porta Lavernale. For this work I produced a replica of the marble Via di Porta Lavernale street sign and replaced the original with the duplicate.
