A residency at the Rijksakademie offers the opportunity to explore and create new work for two years. In addition to facilities like a studio and a work budget, residents artists can request feedback and support from internationally acclaimed artists and scientists, who are connected to the Rijksakademie as advisors. Several large project rooms are available for collaborative projects and pilot presentations.

As a result of severe budget cuts by the Dutch government, the future of the Rijksakademie as we know it is at risk. In the course of 2012 it will become visible what the new government policy entails for the Rijksakademie, and what the residency program will look like in 2013.

Point of departure is the continuation of the residency in its optimal form. We do everything in our power to continue the supply of practical and financial services to all resident artists.

When the new conditions are definite, we will inform you. In the mean time, we encourage you to apply!

Application for the residency 2013 is closed. Information on application for the residency 2014 can be found on our website in October 2012.

The Rijksakademie offers over 50 studios, of which half become available each year for new residents. In 2011, 24 artists have been selected for the residency 2012,  from more than 2100 applications from all over the world.

In general, resident artists have completed their (art) studies and have worked independently as artists for three to five years prior to their application. Experience shows that a residency at the Rijksakademie at this pivotal stage of their careers has the greatest impact. The age of a resident artist is averagely between 25 and 35.

Resident artists are initially admitted for a work period of one year (January to December). After mutual consideration it is decided if the residency will continue into a second year.

Procedure
The selection procedure consists of a number of rounds. Artistic quality and development potential as well as the moment in a career are the decisive factors. Following the selection rounds in April/May, a number of candidates are invited for an interview in June/July at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. The candidates selected for the residency for the following year are announced in July. The definite collaboration agreements for the residency 2013 will be finalized in September 2012.

In brief, an application consists of:
- the online application form, completed
- documentation of work
- CV

The application form should be completed in English. All correspondence relating to the application is in English.

Finances
Until 2012 the residency program is partly supported by the Dutch government. The Rijksakademie Trust Fund raises additional funds from private and governmental foundations, corporations and private donors, both nationally and internationally. With the intended budget cuts the financial details of the residency program 2013 are unclear. We work vigorously to make the Rijksakademie residency accessible for all resident artists, regardless their financial position.

Annual contribution
Before starting work at the Rijksakademie each resident is required to pay an annual contribution. In 2013 this will be €2,750.

Fellowship (situation for residency 2012)
In addition every resident artist has to make effort to raise a Fellowship of € 15.000, preferably in their home country. When you are selected for the Rijksakademie residency program we will provide you with more information.

Resident support
Residents from abroad can qualify, through the agency of the Rijksakademie, for (renting) a modest apartment in Amsterdam. The Rijksakademie also advices on obtaining visas and residence permits.
