Frederique Jonker makes paintings of structures consisting of discarded cardboard, boxes and cans. Individual objects lose their original use, and function merely as forms. Jonker is not primarily interested in the objects' origin, nor are they meant as critical references to the outside world. Foremost, they function as building blocks for a new visual and rhythmic arrangement of reality, one only she can see and share with the viewer in this way.

While Jonker used to approach her imagery with strictness and precision, she recently has allowed herself more freedom to experiment. Compositions are less object centered and therefore more abstract. She explores different techniques as well. She uses aerosols on canvas, enabling her to work quickly but precisely. It results in technically elaborate work that at the same time is fast and humorous. (JS)
