Het werk van Gert Jan Kocken is een doorlopend onderzoek naar de herinnering en visuele voorstelling van omslagpunten in de wereldgeschiedenis, zoals de atoombomaanvallen op Japan. Vanaf het moment dat wij dergelijke gebeurtenissen opnemen in ons collectief geheugen, vormen feiten, interpretaties, meningen en visuele indrukken een ingewikkeld geheel. Dat herinneringsproces wordt beïnvloed door de massamedia en de officiële geschiedschrijving, die ambigue gebeurtenissen weergeven in duidelijke verslagen. Kocken verhoudt zich kritisch tot dergelijke interpretaties en wil juist de complexiteit van de geschiedenis tonen. Door historische beelden en teksten in nieuwe verbanden te presenteren, creëert hij verschillende gezichtspunten, die de toeschouwer aanzetten tot nadenken over afwijkende manieren van kijken en een alternatief verloop van de geschiedenis.
Gert Jan Kocken’s work is an on-going research into the remembrance and visual representation of pivotal episodes in world history, such as the atomic bombings of Japan. When these episodes are committed to our collective memory, they form intricate constellations of facts, interpretations, opinions, and visual impressions. This process of memorization is influenced by official chronicles and mass media, which offer clear-cut accounts of inherently ambiguous events. Kocken critically engages with these accounts and aims to expose the complexity of history. By creating new juxtapositions of historical images and texts, he offers the viewer multiple viewpoints that encourage the contemplation of alternative readings and counterfactual histories.
