Mahmoud Bakhshi comments on the artist’s social role, particularly in relation to capital and politics. Here, autonomy and authority are in constant dialogue. In Bakhshi’s native Iran, art production is largely dominated by visual culture: classical references and traditional forms of expression such as calligraphy and poetry. Bakhshi employs these common forms, but injects a deviant message, making them into poetic critiques of both the political regime and the way the art world is structured.
