For Noah Ryu the future is not about spaceships and aliens, it’s about having different eyes. And digital technology is leading the way. It was during a walk through the woods that Ryu was overcome by a strong desire to enhance the shape of the landscape and change its colours, as if his eyes could function as a high performance camera with a built-in editing tool. Since his body couldn’t live up to his expectations, he decided to bring the virtual interface to the canvas. He produces images one square at a time, like enlarged pixels. They are enriched with filters, glitches and patches of hyper clarity.

Even though informed by digital esthetics, Ryu qualifies himself as a traditional painter. He attempts to express his new way of seeing with old-fashioned tools like brush and canvas, and focuses on regular, ‘analog’ subjects. Ryu also feels the need to integrate his ‘filter paintings’ with his other, more narrative work. Those paintings depict stories of human relationships. The focus is not on seeing the world but rather on being in the world. (ED)
