The work of Rossella Biscotti focuses on particular individuals or events that through their action or critical position determine important social political changes in society. Her production interprets the sharing of stories, which have been banned or forgotten by our history; the artist is interested in the potentiality of these new narrations in the moment in which they start to circulate again within the society.
The project proposed for RijksakademieOPEN is informed by research into the
state of detention. It is developed inside the first prison built for life imprisonment, which opened its doors in 1793 on the island of Santo Stefano, 50 km from the Italian coastline. The prison is a Panopticon resembling the San Carlo Opera Theatre in Naples. The panoptic structure, developed by Jeremy Bentham, expresses the desire of institutional powers to punish the prisoner and annul his identity, through the constant sensation of being controlled.
The sculptures are based on imprints of specific parts of the prison's floor, symbolizing its physical and existential restrictions. They are made of lead sheeting in a process that involves transport of the lead to and from the island.
