The work of Isabelle Cornaro
(1974, FR) evinces an interest in the way our perspectives are historically and culturally determined. Due to her training as an art historian specialised in 16th- and 17th-century Western art, her visual language is strongly associated with the forms and compositions of the past, ranging from Baroque and Classicism to Modernist abstraction.
In her installations, casts and films, Cornaro plays with the possible meanings of everyday implements and artistic objects by placing them in a new context. Just like in the composition of a classical painting, she groups the objects around a specific theme or arranges them according to size, lines of perspective, light and shadow effects, etc. This profoundly questions our perception of the objects and of her work.
(1981, IR) is a curator and writer living in Los Angeles. He is a graduate of Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, New York, and is a co-founder of Bureau des Services sans Spécificité, Geneva. He was the 2010 curatorial fellow at the Queens Museum of Art, NY and curatorial assistant at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. Currently, he is assistant curator at REDCAT, Los Angeles. He is the founder of the blog Presence Documents, and he is a founding member of 127 band, Tehran.
(1968, US) uses photographs and other objects that reference specific bodies of knowledge as starting points for his carefully crafted drawings and sculptures, which he then films. His films arrange and compare the original images and objects–and the ideas, information and knowledge associated with them–in ways that combine with the artist's practice of working in different media at each stage of his projects to explore how imagery and material affect our understanding of culture and history.
