With a background as a typographer, visual artist Josse Pyl examines the construction of language through the biological, organic and technological apparatus of communication.
The utterance of a word originates in the stomach, which breathes the word into the chest and neck, which shape its timbre, then moves through the vocal cords which shape its pitch, into the mouth, where the tongue and teeth shape its final texture and push the word outside the body into the air.
In Pyl’s drawings and installations, the body parts which involve the construction of language are turned inside-out and connected to mechanically constructed and digitally programmed apparatus for speaking and writing, in order to expose the machinery behind those invisible sounds which connect one human to another. Much like in science fiction literature, where the machinery behind a certain technology forms the foundation for the narrative, so too Pyl’s precisely engineered tools determine the visual, kinetic or sculptural outcome of his work.
As the intersection of biological and mechanical tools in relation to communication becomes exceedingly technological, Pyl’s work can be considered a user interface which generates phantom images of the body and new forms of fictions.
