Embedded in the fibers of everyday life is a soft touch of power, almost invisible yet brutally forceful, which imposes on the body to conform to social protocols. As bodies navigate the public sphere, they are compelled to speak the language of their environment and carry out tasks and perform ceremonies, towards civil obedience.
These mechanisms of power have been the focal point of Polina Kanis’ oeuvre, consisting of videos and video performances. The video performance 'Workout' (2011) was recorded in a park in Moscow where Kanis appears as an aerobics teacher for a group of the elderly, performing a public workout which takes the body through movements associated to sports as well as a military march. More recent videos are careful choreographies of actors appearing as mechanical bodies or aphetic zombies, performing slight movements could well be directions of an invisible soft touch of power. These cinematographic video works seem to address the current political climate and its attention to the body as it moves from public to private spaces, while negotiating the fine line between social conformity and individual resistance.
