Marcel van den Berg’s paintings visualize how he senses the world. Van den Berg believes in the physicality of paint. In times of instability there is security in colour, in brushstroke, in transporting expressive energy directly onto the canvas. His works seem to be in a constant state of flux; products of an ongoing process of changing ideas about status, content and meaning. Conceptually his search is inquiring and criticizing social and cultural mechanisms concerning the association with minorities, resulting in a questioning of all forms of human behaviour shown in societies. The result is never preconceived and can be abstract or figurative.
