On 13 November 1918, a protest was held at the entrance of the Kavallerie Kazerne, the current location of the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten. This protest marked the beginning of the Red Week in the Netherlands.
Almost 3,000 men, women and children, led by Henriette Roland Holst and other leftist activists, marched down Sarphatistraat and called on the cavalry soldiers to join the march, attempting to break open the gates.
The protest was tragically suppressed by military gunfire.
Please join us on Tuesday 13 November to commemorate the centennial anniversary of these protests with an exhibition and public discussion. In addition there will be a special performance of De Internationale.
This event also celebrates the legacy of poet and activist Henriette Roland Holst and the work of artist Mieke Van de Voort (RA 04/05).
