Kodwo Eshun

Kodwo Eshun is a filmmaker, theorist and artist, based in London. In 2002, he founded The Otolith Group together with Anjalika Sagar. The Otolith Group’s work emerges from traditions of the essay film and militant filmmaking. Encompassing moving image work and extending to writing, curatorial and educational projects, and installations of archival material, their practice bridges an expansive interest in science fiction and futurology with unresolved histories, particularly related to the Global South. This lecture will depart from these practices and long term interests.

In May 2019, the Van Abbemuseum (Eindhoven) will present the first large scale solo exhibition of The Otolith Group that will explore key film and sonic installation works as well as other facets of their expansive research based practice of the past ten years.

This is the first open lecture in the Rijksakademie’s 2019 Public Programme. It will be followed by a lecture by Gabi Ngcobo on Wednesday 6 February (organized in collaboration with de Appel and Casco Art Institute), and a library programme curated by Vincent van Velsen, which will unfold over the coming months, the details of which will be announced soon.
