Alex Walker is a graphic designer and educator based in Amsterdam. His practice explores the space where written language and materiality intersect, through typography and printed matter. In 2019 he graduated from an MFA at Sandberg Instituut. Between 2020–2024 he worked as a typography tutor at Design Academy Eindhoven. As a specialist in book design, he collaborates with writers, artists, cultural institutions, and independent publishers. He regularly designs books for Divided publishing (authors include Fanny Howe, Ghayath Almadhoun, Ariana Reines and Ghislaine Leung) and Pântano books (authors include CAConrad, Serubiri Moses and Isadora Neves Marques).

As a tech fellow in the Rijksakademie’s Print Workshop, he is currently developing ‘Rijksakademie Resources for Artist Self-Publishing (RRAS-P)’.

Research

'Rijksakademie Resources for Artists Self-Publishing (RRAS-P)' is a collection of tools and resources related to book design, book making, and self-publishing aimed at artists within the context of the Rijksakademie Print Workshop.

This includes: organising a paper sample library; printing various test sheets, sample booklets and guides for different techniques possible in the workshop; online directories listing papers, printers and binders, art book fairs and artist-book publishers; and collating useful information related to the economies of printing and publishing.
