Artist statement

Hannah Dawn Henderson is a writer and artistic researcher based between The Hague, Amsterdam, and Manchester (UK), whose artistic practice is underpinned by a research drive that sees lyrical narratives accompanied by (choreo)graphic and haptic methods of image handling. The resulting works – films, texts, and installations – explore what sensibilities and knowledge can arise from the experience of inhabiting positions characterised by liminal and illegible qualities. In turn, this enquiry stimulates critical reflections on how bodies become politicised/political entities, whilst simultaneously remaining individual vessels in which singular, autobiographical experiences are compiled. Thematic areas of interest include: diasporic legacies, archival practices, impermanence, dreamscapes and other intangible spaces/chronologies, as well as hermeneutics and rituals as story-telling devices.

Hannah Dawn has participated in exhibitions, presentations and projects internationally, in contexts such as Archive Gallery (London, UK), Greylight Projects (Brussels, BE), Stroom (The Hague, NL), Het Nieuwe Instituut (Rotterdam, UK) and the Wilberforce Institute (Kingston-upon-Hull, UK). Their films and other time-based works have been featured in festivals including Moves: International Festival of Movement on Screen (UK), Queer Arts Antwerpen (BE), Experiments in Cinema (Albuquerque, US), and the International Film Festival Rotterdam.
