Ashfika Rahman is a visual artist based in Bangladesh. Her artistic journey has been deeply influenced by her mother, a dedicated social worker. This inspiration continues to guide her current project—an alternative archive that brings visibility to, and responds to, the suppression of marginalized communities in Bangladesh.
Ashfika draws from mythology, spirituality, and folk tales, reimagining these stories through the lens of contemporary social and political issues. While photography is central to her work, she also uses text, drawing, printmaking, textiles, sound, video, and installation. These varied mediums allow her to explore complex topics and document the lived experiences of people affected by displacement, violence, cultural colonization, and systemic oppression.
Her work goes beyond traditional archiving. Ashfika collaborates directly with the communities she represents, ensuring their stories are told with honesty and care. She focuses on voices that are often silenced or erased by government policies and dominant social structures. Through her installations, she creates a living, critical archive one that resists erasure, sparks dialogue, and connects local stories to a global audience. Her art is both an act of resistance and a tribute to resilience.
Ashfika studied photography at Hochschule Hannover in Germany and earned her degree from the Pathshala South Asian Media Institute in Bangladesh.
She has received several awards and recognitions. She was a finalist for the Samdani Art Award in 2018, 2020, and 2023, and for The Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2022. In 2021, she won the Format Festival Open Call Award and was nominated for the Leica Oskar Barnack Award in 2020. In 2019, she was named one of PH Museum’s “12 Women Photographers to Watch.”
Her solo exhibitions have been held at Gallery Vitrine (Switzerland) and Drik Gallery (Bangladesh). She has also participated in major festivals and group exhibitions worldwide, including the Triennial of Photography Hamburg (Germany), Dhaka Art Summit, Format Festival (UK), Lumix Photo Festival (Germany), Zurich Human Rights Film Festival, Chobi Mela International Photo Festival (Bangladesh), Photo SCHWEIZ (Switzerland), Jimei x Arles International Photo Festival (China), PHOTO 2020 Festival (Australia), and the Busan Biennale (South Korea).
